Frequently asked questions

Getting started
How do I add the widget to my Home Screen?
  1. Touch and hold an empty area of your Home Screen until the apps jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
  3. Search for Taken and add the small widget.
  4. Touch and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget and choose the pill it should show.

Tap Take on the widget after each dose. You don't need to open the app.

Can I use Siri, Shortcuts or the Action button?

Yes, on iOS 17 and later. Use the name you gave your pill:

  • "Did I take Fish oil in Taken?" Siri says whether it's logged today, and when.
  • "Log Fish oil in Taken" logs today's dose. Saying it twice doesn't log twice.
  • "Undo Fish oil in Taken" removes today's log after you confirm.

With only one pill, "Did I take it in Taken?" is enough. If two pills could match what you said, Siri asks which one. With Apple Intelligence, Siri understands more natural wording. You can also make your own phrase in the Shortcuts app.

On iOS 18, add the Log a pill control to Control Center or the Lock Screen, or choose a Taken shortcut for the Action button in Settings › Action Button.

Can I track more than one pill?

Yes. Add each pill with + in the app, then add one widget per pill and choose its pill in Edit Widget. Each pill has its own history, streak and settings.

What's the difference between "Every day" and "When I take it"?

Every day is for pills you take daily. Taken shows whether today is logged and keeps a streak of days logged.

When I take it is for optional pills, like a vitamin you take some days. It keeps a simple record of the days you took it, with no streak.

You can switch at any time in Settings → your pill.

Logging
I took my pill after midnight. Why does it count for the day before?

By design. Each pill's day starts at 4 AM, so a late-evening dose taken at 12:30 AM still counts for that evening. Otherwise the next evening would already show "Taken" and you might skip the dose that mattered.

You can change when a pill's day starts in Settings → your pill → Day starts at.

How do I undo a dose I logged by mistake?
  • On the widget: tap Undo within 30 seconds of logging.
  • In the app: tap Undo under the ring on Home at any time that day.
  • On Apple Watch: tap Undo under a confirmed dose and confirm.
  • With Siri: say "Undo your pill in Taken". Siri asks you to confirm first.
I'm not sure whether I took it today. Can Taken tell?

If you set a bottle count, yes. In Settings → your pill → Bottle count, enter how many are in the bottle. When today isn't logged yet, tap Not sure if you took it? on Home, count what's left, and Taken compares it with your log.

It can add a dose the count proves, but it never removes one. That decision stays with you.

I forgot to log yesterday. Can I add it?

Yes, for yesterday or the day before. Open History, tap the day in the calendar, then tap Add this day. Added days are marked as added later.

What is a freeze?

A freeze keeps your streak going over a day you didn't log. You start with one and earn another every 3 days logged, up to 2. They're used automatically, so a single gap doesn't reset your streak.

Reminders
How do reminders work?

Turn them on per pill in Settings → your pill → Reminder. Taken reminds you only if that pill isn't logged yet, never after you've logged it. Tap I took it on the notification to log without opening the app.

Choose a set time, or My usual time: Taken learns when you usually log and reminds you 30 minutes after that. It becomes available after 5 evenings logged on time.

Why didn't my reminder appear?
  • The pill was already logged that day, so no reminder was needed.
  • Notifications for Taken are off. Turn them on in iPhone Settings → Notifications → Taken.
  • A Focus mode was silencing notifications.
  • The pill is set to When I take it. Reminders are only for every-day pills.
Apple Watch
How do I use Taken on Apple Watch?

Open the Watch app on your iPhone, find Taken under Available Apps and tap Install. On the watch, tap Take under a pill. It shows "Sending…" until your iPhone confirms.

Why doesn't my watch show a dose I logged on the widget?

The widget can't talk to the watch directly, so your watch picks it up the next time you open Taken on it. Your iPhone always has the record.

Your data
How do I export my history, for example for my doctor?

Go to Settings → Export history. Taken creates a PDF with each pill's calendar and every dose logged, including pills you stopped tracking. Then tap Share PDF to save or send it.

Where is my data? Will I keep it on a new iPhone?

Your data is stored only on your iPhone. Taken has no accounts and no servers. It's included in your iPhone's iCloud or computer backup, so restoring a new iPhone from that backup brings your history with it.

More in our Privacy Policy.

How do I stop tracking a pill, or delete everything?

To stop tracking a pill, go to Settings → your pill → Stop tracking. Its history is kept.

To delete all of Taken's data, delete the app from your iPhone.

How do I change Taken's language?

Taken follows your iPhone's language. To use a different language just for Taken, go to iPhone Settings → Apps → Taken → Language (on iOS 17: Settings → Taken → Language). In Taken, Settings → Language takes you there.

Good to know
Is Taken medical advice?

No. Taken is a record of what you log. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about your medication and doses.
